Step into the unique atmosphere of Makoa Farm, a historic estate founded in 1901, featuring an original colonial-style farmhouse. Nestled at an elevation of 1,070 meters, the farm benefits from the cool, refreshing climate and lush vegetation of Tanzania’s highlands.
More than just a lodge, Makoa Farm was once a thriving coffee plantation and has since evolved into a sanctuary—what we lovingly call a “Noah’s Ark” for domestic animals and smaller wildlife. These creatures roam freely through the protected bushland surrounding the farm, bordered by the peaceful Makoa and Kikafu rivers, creating a harmonious natural haven.
Guests are hosted in four luxurious cottages, offering a spacious and comfortable blend of house and tent on elevated platforms with en-suite bathrooms. Each cottage features a private veranda, where you can often spot birds or monkeys playing in the trees or on the roof. On clear days, enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit and the rainforest that blankets its lower slopes.
In addition, we offer a charming guest cottage, once used as the farm’s papaya dryer. This cozy maisonette-style space has been lovingly renovated, with a large double bed downstairs, a smaller double bed and single bed upstairs, an en-suite bathroom, and a spacious veranda for ultimate relaxation.
